Bon Dance Festivities

The community is invited to enjoy dance performances by Ko‘olau Sakura Odori Kai and Iwakuni Odori Aiko Kai. ‘Aiea Taiheiji Yagura Gumi will provide live bon dance music, including vocals, flutes, chimes, and the powerful rhythms of taiko drums. Hawai‘i Eisa Shinyuu Kai will perform live Okinawan music with the unique sounds of the Sanshin, complementing the percussion.

New to the festival this year is the Hawai‘i Okinawa Creative Arts performing a Shishimai Lion Dance. Shishimai (獅子舞) is a Japanese word that combines the words shishi (lion) and mai (dance). It can refer to a festive lion dance performed at festivals and celebrations during the New Year. Somei Taiko is another new addition to the festival with taiko drum performances this year. This year’s festival also includes a special performance the Lāhainā Ondo in honor of those affected by the Lāhainā wildfires last year.
